Palestinian officials say Israeli forces killed Islamic Jihad member

A member of the Islamic Jihad militia group was shot dead in the West Bank by Israeli soldiers, the Palestinian Health Ministry said on Tuesday.The group confirmed that the deceased was one of its members.According to an Israeli army statement, soldiers took two suspects into custody late on Monday in the northern part of the Jordan valley.“During the operation, shots were fired at two soldiers and a passing vehicle threw an explosive at them.“The Israeli troops then returned fire; no Israeli soldiers were injured in the incident.”Israel forces have occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem since the 1967 Six-Day war.Palestinian groups hope to use the region as the basis of an eventual independent state, with East Jerusalem as the capital.Islamic Jihad is an Islamist organisation that is not part of the Palestine Liberation Organisation.It is considered a terrorist organisation by many Western countries.
